Robot or Human?
Commercial floor cleaning
Cleaner with a walk-behind autoscrubber vs Autonomous floor scrubber
Whirrwork modelled estimates, not facts. Methodology · Track record
On these numbers it is close: decide on the things that are not cost. The robot would sit idle most of the time; it pays off at higher volume or longer hours. Payback is longer than three years, which is longer than many robot contracts and some robot companies.

What moves the answer most
Each bar shows the 5-year NPV of the best robot option when one input moves to the low or high end of its range, with the rest held at your values.
Cost per unit to 2035
Real terms (today's money). Robot hardware follows Wright's law; wages follow each country's history. Shaded band: robots-slow to robots-fast scenarios. Whirrwork modelled estimates, not facts.

What the spreadsheet misses
- Safety
- Fewer slips while floors are wet if the robot cleans after hours; a 300 kg machine near shoppers needs working sensors and sensible routes.
- Quality
- Robots are consistent on open floor and log what they cleaned. They miss edges and spot spills unless someone follows up.
- Flexibility
- A cleaner handles bathrooms, bins and the unexpected; a scrubber scrubs.
- Edge cases
- Cluttered, changing layouts (pallets left in aisles) kill robot productivity fast.
- Customer experience
- Usually neutral to positive in stores; noise at night is a non-issue.
- Jobs and redeployment
- The common pattern is redeploying cleaners to detail work rather than cutting hours one-for-one; plan the redeployment before the robot arrives.
- Regulation
- No licence needed. Check lease terms for damage liability.
