Crop spraying

Ground rig or crop duster (custom hire) vs Spray drone (hire, or buy and fly)

Whirrwork modelled estimates, not facts. Methodology · Track record

Human · Per year$17,400Ground rig (custom hire)
Robot · Per year$22,121Buy a spray drone and fly it
Payback62 months
Crossover yearafter 2035 (2031–after 2035)Base-case year (earliest to latest across scenarios)

On these numbers people are clearly cheaper. The robot would sit idle most of the time; it pays off at higher volume or longer hours. Payback is longer than three years, which is longer than many robot contracts and some robot companies.

Workload
Assumption

Acres sprayed per year (all passes).

Assumption

Flying hours per spray day.

Assumption

Spray days per month, averaged.

Assumption

Volume is annual.

People

BLS OEWS May 2025 national median hourly wage, SOC 45-2091.

Wages and salaries were 70.0% of total employer compensation cost for private industry workers in June 2026 (ECEC), so total cost = wage / 0.70.

Nominal 4.4% a year, 2015-2025 (ILOSTAT hourly earnings).

Prices

Iowa 2025 average custom rate, self-propelled ground broadcast spraying ($5-$15).

Iowa 2025 average custom aerial application ($9-$16).

US average custom drone spray rate, 2025 (down from $21 in 2024).

Robot
Assumption

Acres per drone-hour in practice, including refills and moves. Spec sheets quote more.

DJI Agras T50 spray-ready package (aircraft alone from $19,999).

Assumption

Extra batteries, generator, mixing trailer, certification (FAA Part 137 in the US) and insurance.

Assumption

Yearly repairs and battery replacement, share of price.

Assumption

Useful life in years.

Assumption

Share of spray hours flyable (wind, rain).

Assumption

Work lost to faults.

Assumption

Acres a drone cannot do well (very large flat fields at high volume rates).

Assumption

Crew minutes per drone-hour: pilot plus a mixer/visual observer.

Assumption

Generator or grid energy per drone-hour (kWh).

Assumption

Electricity price per kWh (USD). Check your bill; energy is rarely a big line.

Money
Assumption

Annual financing / discount rate. Nobody publishes yours; 8% is a round mid-2026 commercial borrowing guess.

Assumption

Years in the NPV comparison.

Assumption

Share of a human service price that is labour (rises with wages). Used to escalate and to adjust US service prices to other countries.

Assumption

Share of a robot service price that is labour (pilot, technician). The rest is equipment, which learning curves make cheaper.

Assumption

Share of a lease or RaaS fee that pays for hardware (learns down). The rest is service and support (moves with wages).

What the spreadsheet misses

Safety
No crushed crop or soil compaction; operators are near the chemical when mixing, as with any method.
Quality
Good on small, wet or irregular fields; ground rigs win on huge flat fields at high water volumes.
Flexibility
Drones fly when fields are too wet for a rig.
Edge cases
Drift, label rates and tank size limit what a drone can apply.
Customer experience
Neighbours notice less noise than a crop duster.
Jobs and redeployment
Creates operator jobs; custom applicators often add drones to their fleets.
Regulation
US needs FAA Part 107 plus Part 137 and a 44807 exemption for heavy drones, and state pesticide licences; other countries differ.
